Some excellent walking exists in all directions the Pennine Way being the most challenging. If the need arises then you do have good access by rail links or a drive to the cities of Sheffield and Manchester with a wide range of shops cafes bar theatre and other attractions. Nearby, Hope, offers all the local amenities, including a post office, groceries, and a pub, ideal for those who are only seeking to explore by foot.
